                                            The Springhill Missionary Baptist Church

148 years

Prayer was the signal that Sister Rachel Hornsby received to conduct a prayer meeting at her home on January 29, 1871, a night when this church was created and because of the success of this meeting, the Rev. H. W. Walker led us into this organization with the following members, who obtained their letters from the Franklin Covenant Baptist Church. Namely: Alex Robinson, Peter Hollings, Daniel Way, S.C. Hornsby, Dennis Jones and Rachel Hornsby, Martha Hornsby, Dinah Hornsby and Laura Robinson.

These followers were called as a council for the organization: Rev. W. L. Kilpatrick and Rev. J. J. Davis from the Hephzibah Association and Revs' Nathan Walker, Peter Walker, Alfred Young and Henry Walker from the Walker Association. Rev. W. L. Kilpatrick was chosen to preside over the meeting. He appointed T. J. Hornsby to act as clerk. They sang a hymn and had prayer. They mutually agreed to name this new birth the Springhill Baptist Church. Before this meeting was adjourned, the following officers were elected:

Bro. H. J. Walker, Pastor

Bro. T. J. Hornsby, Clerk

Bro. Daniel Way, Treasurer

Bro. S. C. Hornsby, Sexton

Bros. Alex Robinson and Peter Hollings, Deacons

On completion of the election, Rev. Kilpatrick gave the officers a description of their duties to be performed to the church. Under the leadership of Rev. Walker, we built a brush harbor and a log house for worshipping. In 1873 he ordained 2 Deacons: S. C. Hornsby and Hamilton Dukes. In January 1880, he ordained Rev. T. J. Hornsby to the ministry. The membership grew and Rev. Walker made plans for a larger house of worship to be built, but he was called to a larger field of labor, and after 9 years of service he resigned.

After the resignation of Rev. Walker, the church called Rev. T. J. Hornsby to lead us. As the log house was now too small for the membership, under the guidance of Rev. Hornsby, the first frame house of worship was built and 3 acres of land was purchased. In 1883, he ordained 2 Deacons: Neely Brown, Sr. and J. B. Ealy. He also organized a Sunday school and Senior Choir. The church continued to grow in membership. Rev. Hornsby resigned in 1888 to accept a call to the Antioch Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia.

Shortly after his resignation in 1888, Rev. A. L. D'Antignac was called and throughout the days that he led us, the church continued to enjoy a season. He baptized many followers and increased not only the membership, but the popularity of the church as well. He worked very hard and served faithfully. His stay was short. He resigned in 1891.

Striving with prayer, great spiritual health and God as our manager, we were directed by our Lord to Rev. R. J. Johnson, who was only a licensed minister of the Franklin Covenant Baptist Church. Rev. Johnson was immediately called to ordination by his church and was installed as pastor of the Springhill Baptist Church by Rev. T. J. Hornsby on the 1st Saturday in February 1892. Under his pastoral guidance, we built the 3rd house of worship and purchased 6 acres of land. Other improvements around the church were accomplished.

Rev. Johnson was a wonderful pastor. Many lost and wandering souls were converted and added as followers of the church. In 1909, as the membership was rapidly increasing, the church was remodeled and at that time, the corner stone was laid. He made many commendable changes in the policies of the church due to its growth and conditions for advancing operations.

Good leadership forms the pattern of human lives beginning with infancy. Loving, understanding and experienced direction to help guide our progress are the stepping stones which lead to confidence and success. With this motive, Rev. Johnson was able to ordain the following ministers:

Rev. S. S. Walker, September 1896

Rev. S. C. Walker, February 1897 Rev. R. W. Walker, January 1899

Rev. F. E. Walker, July 1899 (by letter)

Rev. J. L. Brown, April 1911

Rev. E. G. Ware, June 1911

Rev. Henry Williams, July 1923 (by letter)

In 1892, the following deacons were ordained: Thomas Walker, Sr. and Sam Smith, in 1905: Floyd Palmer (by letter), in 1906: Lewis Jones, Willie Williams and White Walker in 1924: Sam Brown, Charlie Wright, Ink

Williams and John Green, in 1917: H. L. Walker, A .P. Streetman, Solomon Wright and Charlie Evans, in

1921: Charlie Rivers, Amos Brown and Thomas Walker, Jr., in 1924: Jessie Williams, Robert Williams and Vinter Wright. Upon serving the church for 33 years, rendering faithful service and spiritual advice, he departed this life in September 1925.

Various ministers conducted services for us during our search for new leadership. In 1926, we were gifted with the leadership of Rev. D. G. Smith. He took control of the work and mastered it greatly with God as his guide. He ordained the following deacons in 1932: Willie Jones, Arthur Wright, Gartrell Tarver, E. K. Ealy and Oliver Williams. Rev. Smith gave us 6 years of dedicated service and later resigned to climb a higher ladder of success.

In 1934, while seeking to unfold the true concepts of a divine leader, we gained the helping hand of one of our greatest leaders, Rev. R. B. Mabry. His service will forever be cherished by all that knew him. Upon completing 5 years and 10 months at Springhill, he resigned in 1940. From November 1941 to October 1942, we received the word of God from ministers of our surrounding community.

October 1942, Rev. Edwin Lee Tanksley was called and he accepted his responsibilities in 1943. Under his administration, the church made many outstanding improvements. A brick wall was built around the church for its protection. The church later improved with a new ceiling, new flooring, interior and exterior were painted, and electric lights, fan, clock and pump were installed. A heating system that consisted of 5 gas heaters, rest rooms and new pews were added and a pool for baptism was installed inside the church. Rev. Tanksley received by letter 2 deacons: J. C. Sanders and W. P. Allen. In 1952, Rev. Tanksley ordained the following deacons: Grady Brown, Robert Walker, Sr., and Levi Wright.

Rev. Tanksley motivated us spiritually and led us toward progressive heights for 18 years. Due to illness, he felt that his responsibility of the church was too great for him to continue, therefore, he asked the church to accept his resignation and he resigned in May 1961. From May 1961 to June 1962, we received the word of God from ministers of our surrounding community.

On June 16, 1962, God granted us with Rev. H. L. Harrison. Many new members came under his astounding leadership and joined hands with us to fellowship in God's good graces. 9 new deacons were added to our church register: Robert Martin, Lewis Jones, Johnny Taylor, Milton Williams, Charlie Tarver, Jasper Wright, Robert Walker, Jr., Willie Mosley and Willie Flowers (by Letter). Accomplishments were made by the numbers, the church was repainted, an annex with a pastor's study, kitchen, and a storage room was added and rest rooms were enlarged. From 1968 to 1979, a huge number of modifications were made to the exterior and interior of our church. The A. S. Wright Choir and Junior Choir were organized; a new organ and 2 new air conditioners were purchased. Rev. Harrison faithfully served us for 17 years. The church was crippled without a leader from August 1969 to February 1980, but not weaken in spirit or gospel during this period.

February 16, 1980, Rev. Shelton Lee joined us and served for 2 months. He was called to his eternal home by our Almighty God. From May 1980 to February 1981, we received the word of God from various ministers.

February 1981, we were directed to Rev. E. W. Washington. From 1981 to 1991, members along with Rev.

Washington continued with the beautification of the church. During this administration, he ordained Rev. Howard Harden in March 1989 as the Son of the House. The H. L. Harrison and Pollie Wright Choirs were organized and our music department was expanded with a new piano. In October 1989, Rev. Harden became Springhill's Assistant Pastor. He served us until he resigned in March 1991 to heighten his level of work for the Lord. Rev. Washington carried out his duties and responsibilities to Springhill for 10 years. He resigned in January 1991 and served us until March 1991.

From March 1991 to April 1992, Springhill witness "history repeats itself", and again we were without leadership. We were blessed to hear the Word of God spoken from ministers from our surrounding communities. The Springhill Baptist Church will always be grateful for the dedicated services that Rev. Aaron Williams rendered to us for 16 months during this idle period.

Year 1992 to 1999, through God's great blessings, Springhill gave thanks for Rev. McKinley Drake. Pastor Drake has taken on the leadership with a sight for working for the Lord and progressing forward. During this progression, many new achievements have been accomplished, including the addition of a tithe's box and telephones. He also organized the church first Care Ministry. Pastor Drake has appointed 2 Trustees: John Murray and Willie Mincey and ordained 2 Deacons: Herman A. Wright and Phinizy Johnson. In 1994, a new sanctuary was built including a pastor's study, 3 classrooms, financial room, combined choir stand, indoor pool for baptism and a large dining/fellowship room. This great building was dedicated on September 18, 1994. In 1995, the church purchased a personal computer, printer and software. During Pastor Drake's tenure, he brought unity among the church auxiliaries and members, worked along with the members toward the beautification of the church and organized full Sunday services. In December 1996, we gained our 2nd Son of the House, Rev. Willie Mincey. In November 1997, we gained our 3rd Son of the House, Rev. Malik Gordon. Rev. Drake served Springhill faithfully for 6 years and 9 months. He resigned on January 31, 1999 and moved to greater heights.

Year 1999, Springhill voted to have Rev. Willie L. Mincey carry on as interim pastor. Rev. Mincey was elected as Pastor of Springhill on August 14, 1999. On November 14, 1999 Rev. Mincey was ordained and installed as Pastor.

Year 2000, the Lord continued to bless Springhill. Springhill members were still able to worship and fellowship with our Christian friends of various churches and community ministries. We continued to work toward beautification of the church and we made updates to our music department. On July 30, 2000, Beatrice Neely was licensed and became our 1st Daughter of the House. October 2000, Minister Neely purchased and donated furniture for the front lobby. November 2000, due to continued growth the church purchased its 1St van.

August 2001 brought us continued growth. Pastor Mincey ordained the following Deacons: Deacon Milton Pugh and Deacon Tyrone Johnson. He appointed the following Trustees: Mary Parker, Florine Roundtree, Christine Ryans, Mervin Greene and Tyrone Parker.

Year 2002 Pastor Mincey appointed a new Chairman of the Deacon Board: Deacon Jasper Wright and Assistant Chairman: Deacon Herman A. Wright. He also appointed the following trustees: Annie L. Brown, Maefield Streetman and Richard Green Jr.

Year 2003, The Holy Spirit directed Pastor Mincey to establish several new ministries. After teaching bible study for two years, in January, Rev. Ella Thomas became Minister of Christian Education and Tony Carswell volunteered to teach the youth along with several of Springhill Baptist Church members. Our bible study averages over 50 members on Wednesday nights. Pastor Mincey noticed our aging memberships and it was now time for the church to give back. Every 5th Saturday of the month is Senior Citizen Day. Our seniors enjoy games, fellowship and dining. He also combined The Mother's Board and Deaconess Board. Keeping in line with scriptures "Let all things be done decently and in order", I Cor 14:40. Pastor Mincey requested Leadership training for all ministries. He states "When you know better then and only then can you do better." The church has also purchased a copier machine, a new computer, t-shirts for Pollie Wright Youth Choir, choir robes for the Sanctuary Choir, (200) King James Bibles, kitchen stove and vent, a refrigerator, an ice machine and with the assistance of Minister Neely, the church was able to have a mural painted over the baptismal pool by Min. Dorithea Suggs and her son.

In April 2003, Bro. Robert Reid became the Minister of Music, where he along with the church choirs continues to bless us through praise and song.

Year 2004, under the pastorate of Rev. Mincey, the church has purchased a new keyboard/organ. He combined the Sanctuary and Senior Choirs, added a secretary room, and adopted Browns Helping Hands Personal Care Home. He organized a Health/Wellness Ministry and Hospitality Ministry and we gained 1 Deacon by Christian Experience, Deacon Alton Griffin. In Dec. 2004, Pastor Mincey ordained the following Deacons: Deacon David Powell and Deacon Larry Middlebrooks.

Year 2005, as an energetic and humble servant of the Lord, his desire to offer his service and will of the church to God’s ends were evidenced by Springhill's growth. God used Rev. Mincey's gifting of encouragement and a dynamic personality to engage church members and visitors of all colors and backgrounds. Springhill continued to grow under Pastor Mincey leadership. He appointed the following Trustees: Faye Mincey, Mildred Matthews and Patricia Green. On July 31, 2005, Brenda Mealing was licensed and became our Youth Minister. A new extension was completed and dedicated on August 14, 2005. Being led by the Holy Spirit, Pastor Mincey wanted to now show our youth how much he appreciated them being a part of the church. As with the seniors, the youth department now has planned activities 4 times a year.

In 2006, the church organized many church activities and programs, among them; a scholarship fund for

Springhill’s graduating youth from high school, several new ministries the Voices of Praise Choir, Young Adult Ministry, Adult Literacy Ministry, W. L. Mincey Choir, Angels of Mercy Dance Ministry, and Springhill Praise Team Ministry. The church has purchased 2 copiers, 3 water coolers, 3 baby changing tables, and 6 computers and desks. Many programs were designed to include the youth of the church because Rev. Mincey believed in their training and encouragement. It was also during this time the membership was divided among the deacons so that someone could be in touch with every member of the church. We gained 1 Deacon by Christian Experience, Deacon Nathaniel Neely. In December 2006, Pastor Mincey appointed Deacon Tyrone Johnson as Chairman of the Deacon Ministry.

In January 2007, Rev. Mincey continued the spiritual journey of the church through his dynamic sermons. The Lord blessed us again and allowed us to purchase a 2nd Church Van.

Year 2008, membership was steady, and many exterior and interior improvements were made. "The New National Baptist Hymnal Books" was given to the glory of God in honor and memory of Deacon Alton J.

Griffin, Sr. On October 20, 2008, Minister Beatrice Neely and Minister Brenda Parris were ordained. In

December 2008, Pastor Mincey appointed Deacon Milton Pugh as Chairman of the Deacon Ministry, Trustee

Jimmy Pugh as Chairman of the Trustee Ministry. He appointed the following Trustees: Robert Blount, Milton Blount, Bobby Eberhart, Willie P. Flowers, Robert Hornsby, Clayton Neely, Jr., Harold Simon, Wade Wood and Scottie Wright.

Year 2009, Parents and other adults were not to be left out of God's provision for spiritual refreshment and teaching. Whatever your gifts, talents or interests may be, there's a place for you to serve at Springhill.

In September 2010, Pastor Mincey pastored the church, edifying its body. His sermons were punctuated with his real-life experiences, growing the faith of the body an engaging anyone who listened. The church was blessed with the capability to offer tape recordings of each service, expanding the church's ministry to the homes and cars of anyone, anywhere willing to listen. On September 25, 2010 Pastor Mincey appointed the following Trustees: Stanley Spurley, Walter Lott and Calvin Jones.

Year 2011, Springhill Baptist Church is more than the building of physical structures. Without the leadership of Pastor Mincey and caring believer's intent on serving Christ and building each other up in his likeness, there would be no church. Pastor Mincey ordained 1 Deacon, Deacon Bobby Eberhart. On December 17,

2011, Pastor Mincey appointed the following Trustees: Biscayne Johnson, Jr. and John Mitchell. On

December 18, 2011, Rev. Marietta Lee Conner, by Christian Experience became our Daughter of the House.

Year 2013 was one of indescribable spiritual growth and phenomenal dedication by those that loved Springhill Baptist, its pastor, and its people. Pastor Mincey and his wife, Hazel Mincey, worked tirelessly to meet the needs of those they served. Community involvement continued to flourish, and the pews were filled with an active body willing to support a myriad of Springhill Baptist Church ministries. Some renovations were made to improve the interior and exterior of the building, church pews were upholstered, paved parking lots and yard lights across the street. We adopted Haven Munnerlyn United Method Church in Waynesboro, Georgia. Year 2014 was one of the most indescribable spiritual growth and phenomenal dedication by those that loved Springhill Baptist Church, its pastor, and its people. Pastor Mincey and his wife Hazel Mincey, worked incessantly to meet the needs of those they served. Community involvement continued to flourish and the pews were filled with an active body willing to support multitude of Springhill Baptist Church ministries.

Pastor Mincey also appointed the following Trustees: Regina Brown Gresham, Jykia Jackson and Tonya Ryans.

Year 2015 was one continued breakthrough spiritual growth and outstanding dedication by those that loved Springhill Baptist Church, its pastor, and its people. Contrary to popular opinion, leadership is not a reserved position for a particular group of people who were elected or appointed, ordained or enthroned. Leadership is self-made, self-retained, self-inculcated and then exposed through a faithful, sincere and exemplary life.

Pastor Mincey and his wife, Hazel Mincey, continued their selfless leadership as they worked ceaselessly to meet the needs of those they served. Their tireless acts of servant leadership continued to flow among the Springhill Church family as they demonstrated this unspoken quality through an increase in community involvement. The pews were filled with an active body willing to support the multitude of Springhill Baptist Church ministries. Blessings abound and favor bestowed as renovations were made to improve the exterior of the building, which included adding a cover to the back walkway. The church also purchased a supply cabinet, gloves, van, bibles, repaving of church parking lot and a projector.

Year 2016-2017 were years of demonstrating our faith, trust and belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from the pastor, ministers, through Spring Hill ministries, and devoted members. As obstacles arose, our faith continued to grow. During our Summer Revival, a few dedicated members notice damage in the ceiling and roof of our sanctuary. Spring Hill Missionary sanctuary was closed and underwent reconstruction. On July 17, 2016 Spring Hill's Sunday Worship service was cancel. Worship service resume on July 24, 2016 as normal but was held in the kitchen. From July 24, 2016 through November 27, 2016 Praise and Worship service was rendered in our kitchen. During our time of need, God sent some dedicated and loving sisters and brothers in Christ our way to help in our difficult times. With continual praise, we thank our Son of the House, Rev. Howard Harden and Spring Grove Missionary Baptist Church family for opening their doors any time we needed a sanctuary for service. Not only Rev. Harden, but there were other Pastors who called out to Rev. Mincey and extended their support, love, and prayers. We truly  appreciate it and are very thankful to have God fearing men and women on this journey with us. We continued to call on our Father and Lord Jesus Christ through praise and worship claiming our victory while giving Him the glory. As His children, He answered and blessed us to reenter our sanctuary on Dec 4, 2016. In August 2017, Pastor Mincey saw the need to help and support our members who lost their spouses. At that time, a new ministry, The Widows and Widowers Ministry, was form.

Year 2018, God's blessings continue to shower over Springhill Missionary Baptist Church from our great leader, Pastor Willie L. Mincey through our Sons and Daughters of the House, Deacons, Deaconess, and Mother Board to our many ministries and faithful members. As we continue to move forward, we humble ourselves and give praise, honor and glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pastor Mincey and First Lady, Hazel Mincey, works continually to meet the needs of those they served. Our Community involvement continues to flourish through many of our ministries including our Missions Ministry, Care Ministry, and Health Ministry. As we say good bye to some of our faithful members as they journey on to eternal life with the Lord, we are ever thankful for the blessings of God to keep our pews filled with active bodies willing to support Springhill Missionary Baptist Church and serve the Lord through faith and dedication. In April 2018, two of our Sons of the House, Rev. Tyrone Johnson and Rev. Michael Gilmore were ordained to preach God's Gospel. As blessings overflow and favor is given improvements for safety and beautification, to both the interior and exterior of our building, are being continued. We give praise to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Year 2019, As we continue to give praise to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for all He has done, doing, and going to do... We continue to sow our seeds and wait for harvest time. Through God's blessings, Pastor Mincey appointed our new Chairman of the Deacon Board, Dea. Larry Middlebrook. Springhill continues to grow in faith by standing boldly on God's word, staying in the will and way of the Lord and leaning and depending on our Savior, Jesus Christ.

All this happened and will continue to happen by just knowing God, praising Him, and continuing to pray.
